Read the Bible Chronologically: July 2014

Starting this month, we will be publishing our Bible Reading plan on our website in addition to other in-print avenues. I pray this is useful for some!

Over this month, you will see the door begin to close on the prosperous, independent Israel.  Now a divided kingdom since Solomon’s death, God will use the nation of Assyria to carry of the northern 10 tribes (usually referred to simply as “Israel,” “Samaria,” or “Ephraim”) into captivity, resulting in their complete destruction in 722 BC. Next month, we will see the southern kingdom of Judah fall at the hands of the Babylonians.

God used these exiles to punish his people for forgetting him and worshipping other gods, a vice that can be directly traced to them not completing the work he gave them to do when they entered the promised land.  But God’s grace still abounds.  The prophets come not only with God’s law in their words, but also his gospel.  The promise of a Savior who will bear the world’s sins becomes clearer and clearer, especially during the ministry of the prophet Isaiah, as God reveals little details and reminds his people then and now of his unending love for them.
